SoundCheck: Yellowman, Earth, Wind & Fire, Barenaked Ladies, Spam Allstars, Marsha Ambrosius

Yellowman

Details: Tonight 7 p.m. State Theatre, 687 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. $18.50. (727) 895-3045.

Always a hotbed for world-class reggae, downtown St. Pete gets a return visit from Jamaican dancehall legend Yellowman, an icon not only for his albinism but for his music. Jams like Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt and Zungguzungguguzungguzeng (yeah, we spell-checked it) have been sampled by artists like Tupac, N.W.A. and Sublime.

Spam Allstars

With the Hip Abduction, Green Sunshine

Details: Friday 9 p.m. Crowbar, 1812 17th St. N, Ybor City. $12-$15. (813) 241-8600.

Hailing from Miami's Little Havana district, this nine-piece Latin fusion ensemble is greater than the sum of its parts. Frontman DJ Le Spam and his fellow road warriors on sax, trombone, guitar, flute, percussion and guitar insist that worries be left at the door and that hips embark on journey of gyration.

Marsha Ambrosius

Details: Saturday 7:30 p.m. Ritz Ybor, 1503 E Seventh Ave., Ybor City. $27-$65. (813) 247-2555.

Former Floetry singer-songwriter Marsha Ambrosius injects just enough silk and sass into her work to make you forget how sad some of the content really is (Feel Some Type of Way). Singles sick of relationship game-playing will relate. The players may actually have a change of heart, too. With a resume that already includes collaborations with Wale, Nas, Jamie Foxx, the Roots, Common and Alicia Keys, this neo-soulstress can't stay under the radar for much longer.

Times correspondent Carole Liparoto can be reached at carole.liparoto@gmail.com. Times staff writer Jay Cridlin contributed to this report.

m Earth, Wind & Fire

Details: Tuesday 8 p.m. Ruth Eckerd Hall, 1111 McMullen-Booth Road, Clearwater. $53-$101. (727) 791-7400.

From the "yes I can" swagger of Shining Star to the cloud-clearing positivity of September, EWF has enough upbeat funk-disco-soul stuff to lead its own parade. Rolling Stone credits the Chicago group with "changing the sound of black pop" via a dynamic style of play. But it's those enormously encouraging anthems that have helped them become one of the bestselling groups of all time. Longtime member Philip Bailey (the ballad man with the falsetto, in the center here) now fronts the band. Also shown here with Bailey are, from left, Verdine White and Ralph Johnson.

m Barenaked Ladies

Details: Saturday, after 4:05 p.m. Rays vs. Arizona Diamondbacks game at Tropicana Field, 1 Stadium Drive, St. Petersburg. Included with game ticket, but you can also pay extra for a wristband that gets you closer to the stage. Toll-free 1-888-326-7297.

Behind a curtain of silly, self-deprecating stage banter, Kraft dinner-loving declarations and white-guy raps, Canadian group the Barenaked Ladies has always been a pretty excellent, harmony-driven alternative rock band. (Paul McCartney once cited BNL as his favorite modern group, saying that the band could "outsing us any day of the week.") Megahit One Week and latest You Run Away, which premiered on The Bachelorette last week, are sure bets, though longtime fans will be hoping for If I Had $1,000,000, The Old Apartment and Brian Wilson. Unfortunately, with the departure of Steven Page (the bespectacled big man with the voice), we're unconvinced it will be the same BNL in centerfield.
