Steel drums signal start of Florida Orchestra's pops program

Steel drums and Bob Marley are part of the Caribbean sound, so why not combine them? That's the inspiration for one of the arrangements by John Shaw and his Tampa Bay Steel Orchestra, which is featured in the Florida Orchestra's first pops program of the season. Shaw, the orchestra's principal percussionist, also has done arrangements of Jimmy Buffett's Lovely Cruise, a Harry Belafonte medley and the famous overture from Rossini's opera William Tell. Wouldn't be surprised if he has something cooked up for a tropical Halloween, too. Fred Johnson will add vocals to the steel drum mix. Concerts are at 8 p.m. Saturday at Mahaffey Theater, St. Petersburg; and 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater. $20-$67. (727) 892-3337 or toll-free 1-800-662-7286;
