The 25 best concerts coming to Tampa Bay this year

Matt and Kim | March 29

Impossibly upbeat indie kids Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino are also impossibly cute — they happen to be boyfriend and girlfriend. Aww. 7 p.m. Czar, 1420 E Seventh Ave., Ybor City. $8-$10. (813) 247-2664.

The Ting Tings | March 29

"Shut up and let me go!" Was there a better chorus to scream out loud during all of 2008? Word is this one's sold out, so you'd better start looking for tickets online. 7 p.m. at the Orpheum, 1402 Republica de Cuba Ave., Ybor City. $15. (813) 248-9500.

Tom Jones | April 17

He'll drop a Sex Bomb on you, sure, but this is the rare veteran act whose new stuff you don't want to miss. Last year's 24 Hours was a swaggering piece of retro soul. 8 p.m. at Ruth Eckerd Hall, 1111 McMullen-Booth Road, Clearwater. $39-$100. (727) 791-7400.

Ben Folds | April 3

Is this piano-pop picasso the heir to Randy Newman's throne? With lyrics that oscillate from wry to sweet to bitter and back, we wouldn't put it past him. 8:30 p.m. at Ritz Ybor, 1503 E Seventh Ave., Ybor City. $32.50. (813) 247-2555.

Flight of the Conchords | April 6

Bret? Present. Jemaine? Present. 7:30 p.m. at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, 10001 N McKinley Drive, Tampa. $38.50. (813) 229-7827.

Lady Gaga | April 7

Everything fans think Madonna should be, Lady Gaga kind of is. Get with the times, Madge! 7 p.m. at Ritz Ybor, 1503 E Seventh Ave., Ybor City. $21-$23. (813) 247-2555.

98 RockFest | April 10

Featuring Disturbed, Staind, Chevelle, Saliva, Static-X and Duff McKagan's Loaded, which we think is a band, and not a statement of fact. 6 p.m. at the St. Pete Times Forum, 401 Channelside Drive, Tampa. $30-$125; four-packs available for $24.50 per ticket. (813) 301-2500.

Seal | April 19

Our only question is, will he bring Heidi Klum? And if so, can we meet her? 7:30 p.m. at the Mahaffey Theater, 400 First St. S, St. Petersburg. $57-$77. (727) 892-5798.

Katy Perry | April 28

Yeah, I Kissed a Girl has been driven into our skulls beyond relief, but the chance to hear some of the biggest singles of '08 in a venue as sweet as Jannus Landing sounds as sweet as cherry Chap Stick. 7 p.m. at Jannus Landing, 16 Second St. N, St. Petersburg. $17. (727) 786-2276.

Fleetwood Mac | April 22

Christine McVie fans, beware: The voice behind Everywhere, Say You Love Me and Little Lies isn't coming on this tour. You've been warned. 8 p.m. at the St. Pete Times Forum, 401 Channelside Drive, Tampa. $46.75-$146.75. (813) 301-2500.

Jimmy Buffett | April 25

The concert starts at 8, but if you want to get in on every minute of the pre-concert Parrothead parties, you'd probably better go set up shop at the Ford Amphitheatre ... now. 8 p.m. at the Ford Amphitheatre, 4802 U.S. 301 N, Tampa. $30-$130. (813) 740-2446.

Nickelback | April 26

More important than the concert: How many of their five 2008 Juno Award nominations will they win?! We're dying to know! 7 p.m. at the Ford Amphitheatre, 4802 U.S. 301 N, Tampa. $29.50-$225; four-packs available for $22.25 per ticket. (813) 740-2446.

Ray LaMontagne | April 29

Ain't no party like an introspective, bearded, sensitive, soulful singer-songwriter party. 8 p.m. at the Tampa Theatre, 711 N Franklin St., Tampa. $27-$37. (813) 274-8981.

Spinal Tap | May 8

Well ... sort of. Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer reunite for an acoustic tour. They won't be dressed as David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel and Derek Smalls, but they will play songs from This Is Spinal Tap and A Mighty Wind. 8 p.m. at the Mahaffey Theater, 400 First St. S, St. Petersburg. $36.50-$49.50. (727) 892-5798.

Kings of Leon | May 8

If there's a group alive that could win a Grammy for a song called Sex on Fire, it's the Followill brothers. 8 p.m. at the USF Sun Dome, 4202 East Fowler Ave, Tampa. $35.50-$43. (813) 974-3111.

Nine Inch Nails / Jane's Addiction | May 9

You know, we never really pictured the ultra-intense Trent Reznor getting along with love-happy Perry Farrell. Though if these guys hook up on a cover of Mountain Song, we're there. Ford Amphitheatre, 4802 U.S. 301 N, Tampa. Tickets on sale soon. (813) 740-2446.

WMNF Tropical Heatwave | May 16

Tampa's signature musical event enters its 28th year with headliners BeauSoleil, Chuck Prophet, the Modern Skirts and great local acts — including the Beauvilles and Magadog. 5 p.m. at the Cuban Club, 2010 Republica de Cuba Ave., Ybor City. (813) 238-8001.

Kenny Chesney | Aug. 8

After the Jimmy Buffett concert, just hang around the Ford Amphitheatre parking lot. The Kenny Chesney tailgate will probably start soon enough. 6:30 p.m. at the Ford Amphitheatre, 4802 U.S. 301 N, Tampa. (813) 740-2446.

Animal Collective | June 8

That sound you just heard was the sound of a hundred blog-addled hippies frantically combing their beards for loose change to buy tickets. (Which, coincidentally, is what a lot of Animal Collective's music sounds like, too.) 8 p.m. at the State Theatre, 687 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. $20. (727) 895-3045

No Doubt | June 2

Let us get this straight: Lawn tickets are only $10? If you buy a full-priced ticket, you get a free download of their entire catalog? And you'll throw Paramore as the opener? How is this not the best concert deal of the year? 6:30 p.m. at the Ford Amphitheatre, 4802 U.S. 301 N, Tampa. $10-$80. (813) 740-2446.

Dave Matthews Band | Aug. 11

To cap the weirdest week in its history, the Ford Amphitheatre brings in Matthews. Probably a good way to unwind at the end of the summer. Ford Amphitheatre, 4802 U.S. 301 N, Tampa. (813) 740-2446.

Il Divo | June 28

Just buy your mom tickets for Mother's Day. She'll be happy, and you'll be happy that she's happy. 7:30 p.m. at the Mahaffey Theater, 400 First St. S, St. Petersburg. $58.70-$128.70. (727) 892-5798.

Coldplay | Aug. 9

As if you haven't been singing Viva La Vida for long enough already, you've still got five months left before they get around to performing it here in Tampa. Ford Amphitheatre, 4802 U.S. 301 N, Tampa. $35-$97.50. (813) 740-2446.

Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival | Aug. 10

Featuring Marilyn Manson, Slayer and Cannibal Corpse. We assume a lot of Kenny Chesney fans will stick around for this one. Ford Amphitheatre, 4802 U.S. 301 N, Tampa. (813) 740-2446.

U2 | Oct. 9

In December 1987, U2 played a memorable show at the old Tampa Stadium as part of their Joshua Tree tour. Seems they're ready for more super-sized venues; their new tour will bring them to RayJay in the fall. Raymond James Stadium, 4201 N Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa. Tickets go on sale April 18. Check Ticketmaster for details.
