The week's best live music

Murder By Death

WEDNESDAY 7:30 p.m. Orpheum, 1902 Republica de Cuba Ave., Ybor City. $12. (813) 248-9500

Named for the '70s satirical film starring Truman Capote, Murder By Death is a twangy alt-rock treat. Gutsy growls over far-fetched tales of dirty brawling and drunken debauchery are the norm here. On Sometimes the Line Walks You, singer Adam Turla playfully proclaims, "I've had a cracked rib or two. I guess I've busted more. I've laid a couple out on the coolin' board." Johnny Cash is the obvious influence, but Murder By Death's marching rhythms, dark cello and punk touches make them a distinctive indulgence.

Uh Huh Her

SATURDAY 8 p.m. Orpheum, 1902 Republica de Cuba Ave., Ybor City. $12-$15. (813) 248-9500

While Leisha Hailey is recognized more for her role in Showtime's The L Word, her work in L.A. band Uh Huh Her glistens with a full-time flair. With superb singer-producer-multi-instrumentalist Camila Grey, Uh Huh Her combines ambient synths, cosmic-rock riffs and luscious vocals. At times (Explode), it's extra electronic and fuzzy and resembles Ladytron. Sometimes it's softer pop-rock (Say So). And at its finest, it's somewhere in between, like on the new Not a Love Song. Look for the first full-length album at the end of May.

H. Vidal's B-Day Bash

With Aych, J-Rod, Treal, Shatik, Acafool, J Streetz, Jolli Boi, Riskay

SATURDAY 10 p.m. Club 360, 1609 E 7th Ave., Ybor City. $10. (813) 965-2278

Some of local hip-hop's biggest names will come together to celebrate Wild 98.7 DJ H. Vidal's "grown-ass man" birthday. Tbt* ultimate artist Aych's got rhymes you'll love, and Orlando's Treal has the bachelor anthem I'm Not Locked Down. And Bartow leading lady Riskay, with current hit Smell That Chick, will make an appearance.

CTQ Wing Ding featuring Clint Black

With Phil Stacey, Cas Haley, Vince Mira, Chuck Wicks, Jeff Bates, Rockie Lynne

SATURDAY 11 a.m. Sarasota County Fairgrounds, 3000 Ringling Blvd., Sarasota. $15-$20. (941) 552-4800

Country star Clint Black already has nine platinum albums under his buckle, so maybe stand-up comedy just seemed like a logical next step. Earlier this week, Black performed his routine on CBS' Secret Talents of the Stars, going head to head with a tap- dancing Mya, and a contorting Sasha Cohen. But wackiness aside, Black will return to his country croon-tune roots Saturday in Sarasota, along with American Idol's Phil Stacey, America's Got Talent's Cas Haley and others.

Streetlight Manifesto

With Dan Potthast, Zox

SUNDAY 7 p.m. State Theater, 687 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. $15. (727) 895-3045

Streetlight Manifesto is back in full skankin,' cheek-bubblin' style on its "41 Days, 41 Nights" tour. And the proposal remains the same — blast exultant ska-punk until the place is overheating. They've played with Less Than Jake, NoFX, and Reel Big Fish.

Gleaming Amoebas open mike series

SUNDAY 8 p.m. Dave's Aqua Lounge,10820 Gandy Blvd. St. Petersburg. (727) 576-1091

St. Pete rock trio Gleaming Amoebas will host a new Open Mic series at Dave's Aqua Lounge each Sunday. Folks can bring their books, boomerangs, banjos, or even projector-friendly slides, they say.

Saves the Day

With Metro Station, Armor for Sleep, Set Your Goals

WEDNESDAY 6 p.m. State Theater, 687 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. $17-$20. (727) 895-3045

Young up-and-comers Armor For Sleep and Metro Station join vets Saves the Day for a show that comes one night after a similar show by The Starting Line, Bayside, and Four Year Strong. With their powers combined, this could have become a modern pop-rock fest of sorts. Armor For Sleep may be on the fastest track to fame, recently announcing their spot on Linkin Park's Projekt Revolution tour this summer.
