Weekend concert picks

Chuck Wicks

FRIDAY 7 p.m. Dallas Bull, 3322 U.S. Highway 301 N, Tampa. $9.95. (813) 987-2855.

It wasn't long ago that Chuck Wicks was parking cars at Fleming's Steakhouse. Now, the cuddly countryman is one of the fastest-rising stars on the circuit. And his hit, Stealing Cinderella, is already an ultimate wedding song. Wicks will support Brad Paisley on tour this summer. Before that, he hits the Dallas Bull, which after some lighting and sound spruce-ups, is quickly making a name for itself as a premier live country venue.

Yo Majesty

FRIDAY 8 p.m. Orpheum, 1902 Republica de Cuba Ave., Ybor City. $10. (813) 248-9500.

The lesbian duo that is Tampa's Yo Majesty gets crunk, crazy and occasionally topless at shows, but not without making a legitimate statement. Their electro-rap liberation has recently garnered major national attention. On that shirtless subject, Jwl B. told the New York Times, "Your boy 50 Cent does his show with his shirt off — why can't I?"

Sensory Overload

Featuring Apes and Androids, Locos por Juana, Tres Bien, Band Marino, History, Acho Brother, Laws, Protoman, Joe Stu, DJ Blenda, Crate Brothers

SATURDAY 9 p.m. Cuban Club, 2010 N Avenida República de Cuba, Tampa. $10. (813) 248-2954.

It will be an overload of the senses indeed, when New York's Apes and Androids, at left, gets going with glammed-out rock theatrics. The glitzy, dance-ready act is currently on the hot lists of Rolling Stone editors and SXSW bloggers, offering bursts of Oingo Boingo, Queen-like falsetto and David Bowie-type trippyness. Sensory Overload also brings the Latin heat of Locos por Juana, as well as a surplus of local talent.

Win Win Winter CD release

With Mouse Fire, Auto! Automatic!!, Mumpsy

SUNDAY 7 p.m. Crowbar, 1812 N 17th St., Ybor City. $7, or $10 with CD. (813) 241-8600.

One of tbt*'s 10 Ultimate Local Bands, Win Win Winter currently leads the vote (check it out at And it's for good reason. Even on first listen, their tunes are warm and inviting. Auto!Automatic!! brings a technically saavy, yet highly imaginative rock sound, perhaps in the realm of Minus the Bear. Orlando's Mumpsy is easily sing-songy and nostalgic, but with modern punch.

Fisher and Boy Birthday Bash 3

With the Matches, Blue October, Suburban Tragedy, Rude Squad

SUNDAY 4 p.m. Derby Lane, 10490 Gandy Blvd., St. Petersburg. $10 at gate. (727) 812-3339.

The iconic greyhound track will host its first-ever rock fest. The Matches just released their third album with the amiable track Wake the Sun. It's sprinkled with sweet harmonics, pop-punk elements and a tinge of Polyphonic Spree buoyancy. And you'll get your chance to dunk-tank Bucs kicker Matt Bryant and 97X's Fisher and Boy with a donation to the Moffitt Cancer Center.

David Dondero

With Have Gun, Will Travel;< King of Spain; Brahm Bones

SUNDAY 6 p.m. New World Brewery, 1313 E Eighth Ave., Ybor City. $8. (813) 248-4969.

Roving rocker David Dondero returns, this time with a full band dubbed The Entire State of Florida. Dondero offers plenty of vibrant Sunshine State imagery on tracks like South of the South. Brahm Bones has bang-up alt-country originals as well as fine covers of The Velvet Underground and Pixies.

The Harlem Gospel Choir

MONDAY 7 p.m. Eckerd College, 4200 54th Avenue S, St. Petersburg. $10 or free to Eckerd students. (727) 864-8894.

The famed Harlem Gospel Choir's spirited performance is really something to experience, no matter your denomination. In January, Stephen Colbert recruited vocal help from the group to end the writers' strike, singing out "let my people go." (Coincidentally, the strike ended soon after.)
