Suitable for families

Bolt (PG) — The rating is due to "mild peril," which may also apply to Disney's animation studio after this comedy's so-so box office performance.

Delgo D (PG) — Mediocre animated fantasy set in a faraway land with has-been celebrity voices (Freddie Prinze Jr., Val Kilmer, Chris Kattan).

High School Musical 3: Senior Year B (G) — Disney's carefree cash cows sing and dance their way onto the big screen. Nothing offensive, unless you're a Metallica fan.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa B (PG) — Mildly crude humor among animated critters isn't a big deal for parents.

The Tale of Despereaux B+ (G) — Nothing offensive in this animated film about a well-read mouse (voice of Matthew Broderick) gallantly assisting a princess.

Suitable for families, with reservations

The Day the Earth Stood Still B+ (PG-13) — Remake of the 1952 sci-fi classic, with Keanu Reeves as an alien threatening the world. Action violence and disaster images.

Marley & Me B (PG) — Brief profanity and suggestiveness aren't a problem; the final 10 minutes may disturb children with pets, though.

Twilight D (PG-13) — Vampire violence and neck-caressing sensuality earned the rating. That won't deter young fans of Stephenie Meyer's book series.

Quantum of Solace B+ (PG-13) — James Bond (Daniel Craig) chases villains and vixens around the world, with nonstop, intense action violence and brief sensuality. Ages 13 and older.

Not suitable

Australia A (PG-13) — The running time (165 min.) will have children squirming, as may the romance between a socialite (Nicole Kidman) and a cowboy (Hugh Jackman). Action violence, sensuality and profanity.

Bedtime Stories (PG) — Adam Sandler's new comedy is reportedly family-friendly but we'll believe that when we see it. Crude humor, brief language.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button B- (PG-13) — Children will become restless watching a man (Brad Pitt) age backward, fall in love and generally do nothing. War violence, sexual content, profanity and smoking.

Doubt B- (PG-13) — Mature themes including accusations of child abuse and challenges to Catholic dogma and smoking make this static stage adaptation unsuitable for children.

Four Christmases B (PG-13) — A happily unmarried couple (Vince Vaughn, Reese Witherspoon) spend the holiday with their divorced parents. Profanity and sexual humor aren't for kids, who will later learn just how miserable family gatherings can be.

Seven Pounds (PG-13) — Will Smith returns to somber drama with mature themes of mortality and atonement, plus profanity and brief sensuality.

Transporter 3 (PG-13) — The first two Transporters were rated R. This one gets a family-friendly rating but still includes "intense action and violence, some sexual content and drug material."

Nothing Like the Holidays B- A Puerto Rican family faces its final Christmas together. Mature themes, including sexual dialogue, profanity and brief drug references

The Spirit  C- (PG-13) — Don't let the comic book roots fool you: Stylized violence, brief nudity and profanity make this inappropriate for children.

Yes Man B (PG-13) — Jim Carrey's long-overdue return to madcap comedy contains "crude sexual humor, language (including an f-word) and brief nudity."
