Contact, an innovative blend of dance and musical theater, will be staged by the Asolo Repertory Theatre and Sarasota Ballet to open the theater company's 2009-10 season. Called a "dance play,'' the musical was choreographed and directed on Broadway by Susan Stroman and won the Tony Award for best musical in 2000, even though it lacked an original score, used prerecorded music (from Tchaikovsky to the Beach Boys) and the actors didn't sing. The Asolo-Sarasota Ballet production will run Oct. 24-Nov. 22.
The Asolo has two more musicals on next season's agenda: The Last Five Years, Jason Robert Brown's story of a marriage between a writer and an actor, told in reverse order from breakup to the day they first met, staged in the intimate Historic Asolo Theater, Jan. 21-Feb. 28; and Dancing Backwards in High Heels — The Ginger Musical, inspired by Ginger Rogers, by Lynette Barkley and Christopher McGovern, May 7-30, 2010.
