'Chicago' actor steps off Broadway stage for Mahaffey show

For all of you who are devoted fans of The Dukes of Hazzard and sophisticated musical comedies, we're afraid we've got some bad news for you. Former TV Duke Tom Wopat will not — repeat, will not — be in the cast of Chicago when the national tour comes to St. Petersburg this weekend.

But before you get too upset, here's some good news to help you soldier on: Wopat's replacement in the role of Billy Flynn is Jason Patrick Sands, who has solid credentials, including playing the same role in the current Broadway production.

We also have a sort-of-local actor in the cast. Evelyn Christina Tonn was born in Sarasota and started her career at Florida Studio Theatre and Asolo Repertory Theatre. She's playing Hunyak in this production.

Of course, the show is replete with great Kander and Ebb songs and groundbreaking choreography by Bob Fosse.

Chicago is set for five shows at the Mahaffey Theater: 8 p.m. Friday, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $40-$70 plus service charge. (727) 892-5767.
