Few composers mastered the deployment of orchestral forces as well as Richard Strauss and Dmitri Shostakovich — Strauss in the tone poems he produced at the end of the 19th century, Shostakovich in the 15 symphonies he wrote in the mid-20th century. Their work occupies the Florida Orchestra's first program of 2010. Stefan Sanderling, shown here, conducts Strauss' Till Eulenspiegel and Tod und Verklarung (Death and Transfiguration) and Shostakovich's Sixth Symphony. Concerts are at 8 p.m. Friday at Morsani Hall of the David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts, Tampa; 8 p.m. Saturday at Mahaffey Theater, St. Petersburg; and 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater. $20-$67.
