Georgia Mallory Guy and Jon Gennari play the mismatched duo in Phoenix, which opens the second season of Tampa Repertory Theatre. The company is staying true to its mandate to stage new work by presenting the Florida premiere of this play by Scott Organ that artistic director C. David Frankel calls "a serious romantic comedy about life, death and regeneration."
Organ's play was included in New Playwrights: The Best Plays 2010, and a movie based on it is in preproduction. "The dynamic here is a familiar one: the sweet and besotted neurotic trying desperately to break down the defenses of a cautious and withholding woman," Jason Zinoman wrote in the New York Times. "The mechanical plot includes the implausible and the inevitable, in equal doses. So why did this critic have such a good time?"
Phoenix, directed by Connie LaMarca-Frankel, opens tonight and runs through Oct. 28 at the Studio Theatre at Hillsborough Community College, Ybor City campus. Shows are 7:30 p.m. Thursday, 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 3 p.m. Sunday. $15, $20. tamparep.org.
