New grass roots theater companies are sprouting up all over the Tampa Bay area. The latest is Revolve Theatre Company, led by co-producers Jessica Alexander and James Rayfield.
"Theatre generates theatre,'' writes Rayfield. "Revolve sees a portion of the theatre experience that is being missed — plays that are more theatrical and explore the special qualities of language and stories that can really only exist in theatre.''
Revolve's first production is Far Away, a play by Caryl Churchill (Top Girls, Serious Money, A Number). It's a brief (about an hour), surrealistic tale of a world at war. "Imagine The Secret Garden rewritten by (Harold) Pinter and you get some idea'' of the opening scene, wrote the Guardian in its review of the 2000 premiere in London.
Far Away's cast includes Jackie Rivera, Eric Burgess and Bridget Bean, directed by Chris Jackson. The play opens tonight and runs through Aug. 15 at Gorilla Theatre, 4419 N Hubert Ave., Tampa. 7 p.m. Thursday; 8 p.m. Friday; 8 and 10:30 p.m. Saturday; 3 and 7 p.m. Sunday. $15 to $25.
