The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a cute, often hilarious piece of theater. Featuring the songwriting of William Finn, it brings together a collection of oddball, dysfunctional spelling whizzes who battle it out over words like "boanthropy,'' "chimerical'' and "weltanschauung.'' Rachel Sheinkin's Tony Award-winning book trades in the geekish stereotypes beloved by all, including Olive Ostrovsky, who sings an ode to My Friend, the Dictionary; Marcy Park, the perfectionist Asian in a plaid Catholic-school uniform; and Chip Tolentino, who is the victim of My Unfortunate Erection. The musical has shows at 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday at Ruth Eckerd Hall, 1111 N McMullen-Booth Road, Clearwater. $47, $57. (727) 791-7400; rutheckerdhall.com.
