Jazz lovers will get a double dip treat this week, when the RCO Big Band (of the Richey Community Orchestra) presents "First Ladies of Jazz" on Sunday and the Frank Parsons BIG Band does "Good Golly Gershwin!," a program of jazz-tinged music by George Gershwin, on Wednesday.
(Note: The Frank Parsons show is sold out; tickets are available for future concerts, though.)
Jazz diva Katt Hefner will be the guest performer with the RCO Big Band in a tribute to Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Lena Horne, as well as her own styling of jazz favorites.
Her program includes A Tisket, A Tasket, Honeysuckle Rose, Stormy Weather and Embraceable You.
Ms. Hefner was a protege of the late Connie Haines, and she has appeared with stars such as Patti LaBelle, the Temptations, Luther Vandross, Al Hibbler and Fred Johnson.
She has been in off-Broadway musicals, on television, in movies, and has performed throughout Florida and the Northeast.
In addition to Ms. Hefner's songs, resident conductor Robert Boyd will lead the RCO Big Band in swing tunes such as In the Mood.
The concert starts at 3 p.m. The Knights of Columbus will serve dinner, at an additional cost, at 2 p.m.
There will be a full cash bar, snacks and beverages for purchase.
Frank Parsons' BIG Band's Wednesday show with songs by Gershwin has sold out, but there are seats left for future concerts:
March 18: You Heard It on Broadway
April 15: Blue, Blues & Bluer (Tax Time)
May 13: BIG Band Heyday Classics
"We encourage people to buy their tickets early, as these shows sell out quickly," said Charlie Skelton, president of the Richey Suncoast Theatre board of directors.
