TAMPA — Susan Hussey, a writer, actor and co-founder of Gorilla Theatre, died of cancer Wednesday. Hussey and her husband, Aubrey Hampton, started the small theater company in Drew Park in 1993.
They mounted first-rate productions such as the musicals Side Show and Falsettos, Wallace Shawn's The Fever and The Designated Mourner and other works that hadn't been seen in the Tampa Bay area.
Hussey wrote several plays, including The Toxic Wave, a drama based on an environmental tragedy in Tampa, and The Dressing Room, an affecting play about a drag queen dying of AIDS.
She was closely involved in Hampton's other business, Aubrey Organics, whose line of beauty products is a staple in health food stores. They have a 6-year-old son, Trevor.
