The movie has Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Amanda Seyfried. The tour has Susie McMonagle, John Hemphill and Rose Sezniak. So what if Mamma Mia! is short of star power on the road? It still figures to do pretty well on its latest swing through the Tampa Bay market. In recent years, producers have found that movies such as Hairspray, Chicago, The Phantom of the Opera and Rent have pumped up the box office for stage versions that were getting a bit tired.
Mamma Mia! onstage has a few more Abba songs than the movie, and the ramshackle, amateurish charm of the musical seems more apt performed live than lip-synched on the big screen. The musical, with Geoffrey Hemingway and Sezniak, above, opens Tuesday and runs through Aug. 24 at Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center. $42-$80. (813) 229-7827, toll-free 1-800-955-1045; tbpac.org.
