Trumpeter Byron Stripling, above, has fashioned a fine career out of paying tribute to Louis "Pops'' Armstrong. Stripling starred in the musical Satchmo: America's Musical Legend, and he performs Armstrong standards such as Sweet Georgia Brown, St. Louis Blues, Honeysuckle Rose and Alexander's Ragtime Band.
And he's got the chops, having been lead trumpeter and soloist with the Count Basie Orchestra under the direction of Thad Jones and Frank Foster.
Stripling is featured in this weekend's pops concerts with the Florida Orchestra, with Jeff Tyzik conducting and Dave Mancini on drums.
Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday at Morsani Hall of the David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts, Tampa; 8 p.m. Saturday at Mahaffey Theater, St. Petersburg; and 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater. $20-$67, with student tickets for $10.
