BRANDON — Hillsborough County will be starting construction next week on new amenities to Bertha and Tony Saladino Park, including a dog park.

The county will start construction on a dog park, walking trail and expanded parking lot on Wednesday.

The park at 1705 Bryan Road will be closed during construction, officials said.

The park currently holds a basketball court, baseball field, playground and picnic shelter.

It is named after the couple who have hosted the Bertha and Tony Saladino Tournament, a week-long event for high school baseball teams in Hillsborough County, each year since 1981.

Officials said dog parks are becoming more popular as owners look for safe places where their pets can get fresh air and exercise. The park will have shade shelters, artificial turf and separate areas for big and small dogs.

Construction on the park is set to finish in late summer 2018.
