Dog names take a turn toward human side

Back in the day, you owned a pet and you named him Blacky or Bear or Bandit. Now you live with a companion animal. Jack or Sadie or Chloé.

Clearly, names matter. Ian Hallett, the county's animal services director, named his childhood dog Buttons. As an adult, he and his wife picked the name Sofie from a baby name book for their dog.

Hallett sees this trend to humanize dogs played out over a dozen years in the county's records.
