Have you ever wondered what kind of dog your lovable "mutt" is? Now there's a chance to find out. PETCO offers a kit to test a mixed-breed dog's DNA.
The Canine Heritage Breed Tests are available at about 300 PETCO stores in six states, including most stores in the Tampa Bay area. The tests are also available at www.petco.com/dna.
The non-invasive test, developed by MetaMorphix, takes cells from the inside of the dog's cheek using a swab. The sample is mailed in a prepaid return envelope to the company's lab for analysis. In four to six weeks, the pet owner will receive the results on a certificate. If you uploaded a photo of the dog on the Web site, the image will be on the certificate.
"These are not only safe and fun, they help our customers take better care of their dogs by learning more about the pet's heritage and adjusting their nutrition, health care and training programs accordingly," says John Dunn, PETCO vice president for pet services.
The standard test, which can detect more than 50 breeds, costs $69.99. The expanded XL version can detect more than 100 breeds and costs $119.99.
