Products to pamper aging pets

As your Fido and Fluffy age into their golden years, they might need some assistance in their everyday lives. So make your home safe and ergonomically friendly for your cats and dogs.

Raise those bowls: Constantly having to bend down every time your pets need a drink of water or a bite of food can wear down their joints. Raising the bowls so your pets aren't lowering their neck is not only a nice gesture, but it also gives you the excuse to get some cute dog or cat furniture. The Bergan Elevated Feeder ($29.97-$79.97) is sleek and minimalist. To change the food or water, lift up the removable metallic silver bowl.

Give the dog a life: A set of stairs can keep your pet from injuring its back or legs while trying to get on and off the furniture. The Richell USA Take Eco-Friendly Bamboo 3-Step Pet Stool ($99) is attractive, so you won't feel shy having it permanently installed in your bedroom. The slip-resistant stool has rubber feet to prevent scratching and sliding on hardwood floors. Designed for small to medium dogs (up to 44 pounds), the stool is lightweight enough to move around.

Get them a really good bed: For aging dogs, memory foam beds can provide comfort and relief. Orvis makes memory foam specifically tailored to dogs because a dog's weight is "distributed over a much smaller surface area than humans." But like memory foam for humans, Orvis' high-density foam helps retain shape and support your doggy's back. The beds come with water-resistant liners in case of accidents. They range in colors and price, and Orvis is having a sale right now on its Dream Lounger Dog Beds. They come in small ($119), medium ($143), large ($199) and extra large ($260) sizes and four colors.

Install a cat waterfall: If your cat loves running water, get a Drinkwell Pet Fountain for Cats ($39.97). The filtered fountain provides a continuous flow of fresh, trickling water, which encourages the cat to drink more. This is especially useful for older felines suffering from kidney disease or diabetes.

Make the stairs safe: If you have an aging dog — especially an older large breed, which typically have back and haunch stiffness in their later years — getting down the stairs can be a precarious proposition. These Dean Flooring Co. Washable Non-Skid Carpet Stair Treads ($132 for a set of 13) won't be an eyesore.

They come in a neutral silver, gray and black pattern, and they have washable nonskid backing.
