Report says Aretha Franklin has cancer

A Detroit TV station has confirmed a National Enquirer report that singer Aretha Franklin has cancer. A relative told Fox 2 in Detroit that the queen of soul is indeed fighting the disease, although no specifics were given. The Enquirer said Franklin had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, but that wasn't confirmed. That's the same kind that killed Patrick Swayze, and has a very low survival rate. Franklin's family says the 68-year-old is "okay" following an undisclosed surgery last week. She had released a statement following the Dec. 2 procedure that read, "The surgery was highly successful. God is still in control." Jesse Jackson was in Detroit to check on her as she recovered, and said Wednesday that her "spirits are high, and her faith is strong," the AP reports. All of Franklin's concerts through 2011 were canceled a few weeks ago, citing "medical reasons."

We're already mystified that Katy Perry married Brit weirdo Russell Brand, but now she's making it officially official: The singer is changing her name to Katy Brand. The 26-year-old said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Wednesday that she's in the process of making the legal move, but she goes by the name informally already, since people call her by that name to try to get her attention. "Like if I'm at an event or something like that, and they want special attention, they go, 'Mrs. Brand!' And I go shwoosh," she said, as she turned to look behind her. Bonus trivia: Katy already changed her name from Kathryn Hudson to her mother's maiden Perry to keep from being mistaken for Kate Hudson, and that seemed to work out fine.

Comedian Patton Oswalt is putting other people's money where his mouth once was, auctioning off his Carvel Black Card for charity. Hey, he's been saying for years he wanted to lose some weight. The Black Card, which entitles the bearer to 75 years of free ice cream (actually $25 worth each week), is up for bids on eBay now. Oswalt has promised that proceeds of the sale will go to the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank as part of Comedy Death-Ray's Xmas Nativity Pageant Benefit, TMZ reports. Carvel is supporting the sale and transfer of ownership of the card to the winning bidder; only 75 such cards exist, and have been doled out to various celebrities. The bidding has already topped $5,000 as of Wednesday afternoon, but that's still way less than the card's total value of about $97,5000, minus whatever Patton's already stuffed in his craw.

Bristol Palin isn't laughing over Kathy Griffin's fat jokes during Friday's Divas Salute the Troops on VH1, telling Fox News she's mystified by the comedian's behavior. Griffin said Palin was the only Dancing With the Stars "contestant in the history of the show to actually gain weight," saying Bristol "gained like 30 pounds a week. ... It was fantastic. She's like the white Precious." Even the crowd didn't care for it, booing the 50-year-old for going after the grizzly cub. "The audience's reaction to this comedian spoke volumes, and the decent people I know would probably have booed her, too," the 20-year-old Palin told Fox News. "I hope people didn't have to pay money to hear her negativity and criticisms."

Kelsey Grammer wasted no time getting over his ex-wife, popping the question to girlfriend Kayte Walsh not even five full months since filing for divorce. Well, when she's 26 years younger than you are, you don't want to waste any time. "They are engaged. They never really announced it, they are very happy and very much in love," rep Stan Rosenfield told RadarOnline. You'll recall the 55-year-old actor's third wife, Camille Donatacci, filed papers in July, partly over her wish to star in Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. The divorce is not yet final, but she has proven to be pretty vicious on the show.
