For those disappointed in not getting a ticket to view the U.S. naval warship that's in town, there is still a chance to get a great picture if you're willing to use a little shoe leather.
While no one is allowed in the port area without a ticket, there is a parking lot located directly across from the USS Independence that affords unimpeded views and great photo opportunities. To get there, though, you will have to park somewhere north or west of the intersection of First Street and Sixth Avenue S and then walk the few blocks to the parking that abuts the C.W. Bill Young Building at USF-St. Petersburg.
There is a long parking lot there that runs along the water with a wide sea wall. It was filled Sunday afternoon with people (and many dogs) taking in the view. No cars or motorized vehicles were allowed to enter it, but bicycles were fine.
The ship is scheduled to remain in St. Petersburg through Monday afternoon.
