Hotels within a walk of the new Salvador Dalí Museum

Renaissance Vinoy Resort The historic Mediterranean style hotel on the downtown waterfront just celebrated its 85th anniversary. The luxury hotel boasts 350 rooms, a gorgeous outdoor pool, a lovely restaurant, tennis courts, a nearby 18-hole golf course and a wide veranda for relaxing with a festive cocktail. Even if you don't stay here, visit the vintage lobby.

501 Fifth Ave. NE; (727) 894-1000 or Rates: about $250 a night, and packages are available occasionally.

Hilton St. Petersburg Bayfront The closest hotel to the Dalí has good proximity to many downtown attractions, too, including the Saturday Morning Market and the Mahaffey Theater. A big box of a hotel with ample parking, plus a Starbucks, salon and fitness center on the ground floor.

333 First St. S; (727) 894-5000 or Rates: from $110 a night.

Hampton Inn & Suites If you've stayed in a Hampton Inn, you know what to expect and won't be disappointed here with the comfy beds and clean rooms. The hotel, built in 2003, matches the Mediterranean style of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club across the street and is in the heart of the downtown entertainment and dining district. The free breakfast is a bonus.

80 Beach Drive NE; (727) 892-9900 or Rates starting at $189; less if booked online and paid in full in advance.

Grayl's Historic Hotel

This 1922 hotel is just across the street from the waterfront venues where many of the city's outdoor events are held, including December's Snowfest and the Mainsail Art Festival, this year on April 16. There's a restaurant and bar — Gatsby's and Packard's — on the ground floor, and the popular Moon Under Water restaurant is next door. Grayl's offers the location of the Vinoy — the Chihuly Collection is on the next block — but without the amenities and price.

40 Beach Drive NE; (727) 896-1080 or Rates start at $99 and go up to $139 a night for waterfront rooms.

Ponce De Leon Boutique Hotel Great location with two restaurants on the ground floor of the renovated 1922 hotel, including the popular tapas restaurant Ceviche. Easy walking distance to the Dalí Museum, the Saturday Morning Market and BayWalk. The place is funky, but if you're looking for unique, book here.

95 Central Ave.; (727) 550-9300 or Rates: about $90 a night. Stay Friday and Saturday and get a $25 gift certificate for Ceviche.

Courtyard Marriott Hotel Stay here and you'll experience St. Petersburg history in updated surroundings. The former Pennsylvania Hotel, built in 1925, was renovated and joined the national hotel chain in 2006. The original light fixtures, floors, ceilings and even the 85-year-old elevator, albeit with updated mechanics, have been preserved. The Courtyard has more of a business vibe than tourist destination, but it's clean and modern.

300 Fourth St. N; (727) 450-6200 or Rates start at $199 a night.

Hotel Indigo The hotel is a bit west of the main downtown action but still within walking distance of many attractions. Part of the InterContinental Hotels group, the Indigo — which was once part of the Holiday Inn group — underwent a $3 million renovation in 2008 that took it from traditional to hip.

234 Third Ave. N; (727) 822-4814 or The Internet rates start at about $143 a night, but it's more if you book through the hotel.

Mansion House Bed & Breakfast A variety of accommodations among the 12 units, all with private bathrooms. Mansion House is on the north edge of downtown, and farther from the Dalí, but it's easy walking to downtown's core. There's an on-site massage therapist.

105 Fifth Ave. NE; (727) 821-9391 and Rates are $159 to $240 through May 31 and $129 to $199 June 1-Oct. 31.

The Pier Hotel Constructed in 1921 during Florida's building boom, the hotel fell on hard times but was renovated and reopened as the Pier Hotel in 2001. There are 33 rooms, which is near BayWalk and across the street from American Stage Theatre. It's a quick stroll to Jannus Live if the contemporary music scene — from hip-hop to indie to classic rock — is on your agenda.

253 Second Ave. N; toll-free 1-800-735-6607 or Rates are $59 to $278 a night, depending on the room and the season.

La Veranda Bed & Breakfast La Veranda is on a fairly busy street on the north edge of downtown, but the five suites in an Old Florida setting muffle the bustle. A city beautification award in 2010 and recommendations in several major publications make it worth checking out. It's farther from the Dalí than most accommodations but easy walking distance to the Chihuly Collection and the Museum of Fine Arts.

111 Fifth Ave. N; (727) 224-1057 or Rates are $95 to $250, depending on room and season.
