When tbt* last caught up with Jordin Sparks, we were palling around with the singer during Super Bowl week. She'd come to Tampa to put on charity concerts at Roy's Hawaiian Fusion Cuisine and Grace Family Church. She was also in the stands to cheer on her hometown Arizona Cardinals at the big game. (Better luck next year.) Before the week's end, we'd introduced the 19-year-old to Twitter (@TheRealJordin), and she had us hooked on Roy's lobster potstickers.
The American Idol season 6 winner has been busy since then. Besides returning to Idol as a guest performer, Sparks embarked on a whirlwind European press tour and recorded her second album, due out July 14. She's also gearing up for a North American tour with the Jonas Brothers this summer. But before they criss-cross the continent, Sparks will return to Florida to kick off Universal Orlando's first-ever Summer Concert Series. The performance is Saturday night, but come earlier in the day for a possible glimpse of Sparks on one of the rides. This will be her first visit to Universal Orlando, and the roller coaster enthusiast plans to get in a few screams.
Last week Sparks called tbt* from her bedroom in Glendale, Ariz., to talk Tampa, Twitter and — why not? — her old Idol compadre Sanjaya Malakar.
What was your favorite part of Super Bowl week?
Being able to be at Roy's was amazing. I've been trying to look for a place that's just as good, and I can't find a place. (laughs) So I cannot wait to come back.
When you were in town, we got you started on Twitter. Are you on there every day now?
Yeah, thanks a lot, guys. I am officially addicted to it. (laughs) So thanks for that. But it's really cool because I'm discovering that it's a way just to let my fans know what I'm doing. Little things, too, like, "Hey, I'm packing," or whatever. ... I follow Ellen DeGeneres, and she's hilarious most of the time. So it's cool to follow different people and see what's going on in their life, too.
Since you do so much traveling, do you actually miss the things we maybe take for granted at home, like making your bed, cleaning your room, cooking for yourself?
Oh my gosh, you have no idea. I've realized that I am so domestic. I love coming home. The funny thing is, I just put some cookies in the oven. (laughs)
What kind of cookies are you making?
What time is it there?
It is 10:40 in the morning. (laughs)
It's 5 o'clock somewhere, right?
Do you catch American Idol here and there?
I do. I actually followed it a lot more this year than I did last year, just because I wasn't touring. So I did get to watch, and I did vote, and I did get to see everything. It was fun. I was a fan this year. (laughs)
Who'd you vote for?
I kind of voted for all four (finalists), which is kind of sad. I voted for everybody each night, but some people got more votes than others.
Your boy Sanjaya is on I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here. Have you been following him?
The first night it came on, I see him and I'm like, "Oh my gosh, there's Sanjaya with a new hairstyle." I miss him! I was like, "Oh, Sanjaya, come home!" I think he's going to win. ... I only watched a couple minutes, but I heard that Sanjaya ate a lizard's tail. So I think if you've got that kind of strength and willpower, I think he will push on through.
