South Tampa and Hyde Park

The South Howard area known as SoHo is Tampa's mecca for bars and restaurants, most of them independently owned.

Dining options run from the world famous Bern's Steak House [1208 S Howard Ave.; (813) 251-2421] and its chic sister restaurant SideBern's [2208 W Morrison Ave.; (813) 258-2233] to the trendy Ciro's Speakeasy and Supper Club [2109 Bayshore Blvd.; (813) 251-0022] and breakfast standby Daily Eats [901 S Howard Ave.; (813) 868-3335].

SoHo attracts a young party crowd with bars such as MacDinton's [405 S Howard Ave.; (813) 251-8999], the Dubliner Irish Pub [2307 W Azeele St.; (813) 258-2257], World of Beer [402 S Howard Ave.; (813) 251-6800] with hundreds of brews and Yard of Ale [406 S Howard Ave.; (813) 251-4433]. Stores such as Squaresville [508 S Howard Ave.; (813) 259-9944] for retro accessories and clothes and Mosh Posh [500 S Howard Ave.; (813) 258-8800] designer consignment, offer eclectic items not found in malls.

South Howard Avenue runs north/south between Hyde Park and Palma Ceia, ending on scenic Bayshore Boulevard, home of the area's favorite waterfront sidewalk with elegant homes. The Colonnade [3401 Bayshore Blvd.; (813) 839-7558] has anchored Bayshore Boulevard since 1935, with seafood and an awesome view of Hillsborough Bay.

Several blocks to the east, Hyde Park Village [1602 W Snow Ave.] is an outdoor shopping mall anchored by Pottery Barn, Anthropologie and Williams-Sonoma. Dining includes the Wine Exchange Bistro, Timpano Italian Chophouse and Irish 31, a mix of traditional Irish pub fare and classic American next door to the dinner-and-a-movie spot CineBistro.

Also in South Tampa is Pane Rustica [3225 S MacDill Ave.; (813) 902-8828], a bakery-turned-bistro with gourmet offerings like King Crab Saffron Ravioli, and Datz [2616 S MacDill Ave.; (813) 831-7000], a deli with dreamy home-made chips and fried chicken and waffles.
