Big doings Tuesday through Saturday to usher in Dalí Museum

Grand events will surround the grand opening of the new Dalí Museum on Tuesday. Some have already taken place for donors, members and special guests, but there's still plenty of festive fun for everyone. Besides the special events around the opening, there are ongoing activities for children and families.

OPENING EVENTS

Tuesday, 9:30 a.m. A "Surreal Procession" begins at the former museum building at 1000 Third St. S and ends eight blocks north on the grounds of the new museum at 1 Dalí Blvd., at the southern end of Bayshore Drive SE. Free. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. A dedication program with Infanta Cristina of Spain, duchess of Palma de Mallorca, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony with members of the Spanish royal family are at 11 a.m., and entertainment will continue until 3 p.m. Free, including light refreshments, and open to the public. To see the interior of the museum after the ceremony, you must purchase a timed ticket in advance online. Tickets are limited and may be sold out. Go to thedali.org.

Wednesday. Regular hours begin at 10 a.m. Tickets may be purchased online and at the front desk. Members get in free. Because of expected crowds, advance purchase online is recommended.

Saturday. Family Day at the Dalí. Some activities free and the docent tour is included in gallery admission. 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. At 10:30 a.m., learn about Dalí's art through a guided tour led by the 2011 Junior Docent class of Douglas Jamerson Elementary in St. Petersburg. At noon, performance artist Marcey Walsch explores the science behind sound and music with water balloons, a space phone and whoopee cushions.

Jan. 22. Los Sueños de Dalí Benefit Party, 8 to 11 p.m., $111. Hosted by the Guild at the Dalí Museum with entertainment, a buffet and beer, wine, champagne and a signature cocktail. Surreal costumes are encouraged. Reservations required. Go to thedali.org.
