If you're feeling there are suddenly a lot of arts and crafts shows in our area, you would be right.

Last week was Art Harvest in Dunedin. Next week is Craft Art in St. Petersburg. This weekend — Sunday to be specific — set your GPS for Clearwater, where Christmas Under the Oaks will set up in Coachman Park in downtown Clearwater.

The reason for this concentration of arts festivals is the same one that has every retail store all gussied up for the holidays.

Shopping!

This is the 33rd year for Christmas Under the Oaks, which is organized by the Clearwater Junior Woman's Club.

About 125 artists and craftsmen bring paintings, glass, jewelry, quilts, ceramics, floral arrangements and holiday decorations.

Mostly, this is a craft show and holiday market — check out the list on the group's website, clearwaterjuniors.org, to get an idea of what will be available. Lots of food, too.

Also, and unusual for such events, a few other not-for-profit groups such as the Humane Society will be there.

A note about the presenters: The Clearwater Junior Woman's Club celebrates its 55th anniversary, during which time it has given grants to organizations that range from local causes such as Coastal Clean-up and Homeless Emergency Project to Heifer International as well as scholarships for education.

There is a $2 entrance donation (proceeds are used to fund the group's community service projects). Children under 12 are admitted free. As always, no pets.

Lennie Bennett can be reached at lennie@sptimes.com or (727) 893-8293.
