Contemporary glass exhibit opening at Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg

Contemporary glass is a good subject for a summer show, and one opening Saturday at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg offers good deals and programs to parents looking for activities out of the sun and heat.

"Global + Local: Studio and Contemporary Glass on Florida's West Coast" features more than 100 works from dozens of the world's best glass artists. The variety of techniques is equally broad as you can see in the William Morris vessel, shown, that resembles clay more than glass.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday with extended hours on Thursday to 8 p.m., and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $17 adults, $15 seniors and $10 students 7 or older including college students with ID.

Family deals and programs

• From 5 to 8 p.m. every Thursday, adult admission is $10.

• Docent tours for families are given every Saturday at 11 a.m., free with admission.

• This Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. is family day with workshops for decorating a small glass piece.

• Beginning June 1 through Aug. 31, the museum teams up with the nearby Chihuly Collection and the Morean Arts Center Glass Studio and Hot Shop for a special offer: One child (ages 6 to 18) is free with each paid adult admission at each venue.

The museum is located at 255 Beach Drive NE. (727) 896-2667 or fine-arts.org.
