The Chihuly Collection opens in about six weeks on Beach Drive in downtown St. Petersburg, the only one of its kind devoted to the world-famous glass artist's work.
Dale Chihuly is known for his dramatic multipiece installations. He's also sartorially distinguished by the paint-spattered shoes he wears even to formal events (such as this dinner in St. Petersburg in 2008).
You're probably seeing more and more versions of them walking around town, worn by local supporters of the project. (Even the mayor and City Council members now boast them.) The Morean Arts Center, which is presenting the Chihuly Collection, hosts "Create Your Own Chihuly Shoes" today so you can join the throng of happy feet. Here you see an earlier paint party in progress.
Bring a pair of shoes to the arts center, 719 Central Ave., from 5 to 7 p.m. today and unleash your inner Chihuly. There's a $5 fee for materials. (727) 822-7872 or moreanartscenter.org.
More news: The Morean Arts Center is also opening a hot shop with stadium seating for glass-blowing demonstrations at its Central Avenue site on July 3. A big street party is planned with lots of family-friendly activities. Details about the Chihuly Collection and hot shop openings will be posted at moreanartscenter.org in early June. Or call (727) 822-7872.
