WASHINGTON – Sen. Bill Nelson still thinks Republicans will not be able to pass the tax bill, even as a key GOP lawmaker cited legislation she's worked on with Nelson as a reason why she may vote yes.
On CNN Wednesday, the Florida Democrat was shown a Buzz headline that read, "Bill Nelson could inadvertently help Republicans pass tax bill."
That's because moderate Republican Sen. Susan Collins said she might secure a vote on a high-risk health care reinsurance program she and Nelson have proposed. That would alleviate some of her concern if the tax bill does away with Obamacare's individual mandate.
But Nelson said that would be an unwise move, saying it would remove any incentive for young people to get health insurance, leaving older and sicker people in the mix and leading to soaring premiums.
"If she trades that off, that's not an even trade," Nelson said.
