Winner of the week
Rick Scott's Navy cap. The ball cap with "Navy" emblazoned in yellow letters is seeing plenty of action as Gov. Scott makes his Where's Baldo tour of Florida to kick off a campaign against Sen. Bill Nelson. Scott and his Navy cap have never lost an election. Its ubiquitous presence before the TV cameras surely helps appeal to veterans, who make up 12 percent of Florida's population.
Winner of the Week II
The Florida Democratic Party. Palm Beach County Democrat Lori Berman won a state Senate special election with 75 percent of the vote — 13 points higher than Hillary Clinton in 2016 and better than any Democrat in a decade. On top of that, U.S. Rep. Dennis Ross of Lakeland announced his retirement, giving Democrats at least an outside shot at picking off that seat. And reflecting party energy, Democrats are fielding far more candidates to challenge Republican legislators than the last off-year election.
Correction: An earlier version of this post incorrectly stated Sen. Bill Nelson's military service. Nelson served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves.
