Snow in Florida creates a social media bonanza

The first significant Tallahassee snowfall in nearly three decades had Floridians reaching for something that wasn’t around the last time this many flakes were falling back in 1989 — their smartphones.

#SnowInFlorida created a social media bonanza that included tiny little snowmen, frozen fountains on the Florida State University campus, and many videos of the snowfall across north Florida.

The snow came to Tallahassee early Tuesday morning, with forecasters saying that Jacksonville could also see some snowfall in the afternoon.

First it was the Tallahassee Police Department.

It’s snowing in Tallahassee! As exciting as this is, please use extreme caution if you are driving & don’t expose yourself to the cold for too long without proper gear. #SunshineState #SnowDay #WinterIsHere #TLHWinterStorm

Meanwhile, the freezing temperatures that shut down Interstate 10 were creating other novel photo opportunities in Florida, such as this Snapchat shot of a fountain on the Florida State University Campus.

What’s going on with the weather? Forecasters are calling the front blasting much of the country a “bomb cyclone” or “winter hurricane.”
