A 31-year-old Tampa man was killed Saturday when a blown tire caused his sports utility vehicle to flip over on Interstate-4, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The driver, who had not been identified pending notification of his family, was travelling westbound, west of Branch Forbes Road, shortly after 6 p.m. when the accident happened.

When his tire blew out, he lost control and entered the center median. At that point the SUV flipped over and he was thrown from the vehicle. Also thrown from the vehicle was 35-year-old Jennifer Rodriguez, a passenger. Neither were wearing seatbelts.

Rodriguez’s two children, ages 13 and 1, were also in the vehicle. The children were wearing seatbelts, and their injuries were less severe than their mother’s.

The three were treated at a hospital.
