SPRING HILL — A shooting at a gas station early Thursday left one man hospitalized, according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office. Now deputies are searching for the shooter.

Deputies received a report about the shooting taking place just before 7 a.m. at the Circle K gas station at 14195 Elgin Blvd., said Hernando Sheriff Al Nienhuis.

The shooter and the wounded man were in separate vehicles, deputies said, and both drove off after the incident.

Deputies found the victim, a middle-aged man, later that morning in a local hospital. He is cooperating with an investigation, the sheriff said.

The Sheriff’s Office did not elaborate on what led to the shooting.

“We’re still trying to figure out what the motive was,” Nienhuis said.

Deputies did not release a description of the shooter or the vehicle they were driving, saying that they were sorting through conflicting information. But Nienhuis said nearby schools were never in any danger.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office at (352) 754-6830.
