SARASOTA — Berkeley Prep coach Kevin Rosepapa scanned the district results and figured his boys could win the region title by a comfortable margin.

“I thought we could win by 100 points,” Rosepapa said.

He was off by 42.

With superior depth, the Buccaneers overwhelmed the competition Friday, outscoring host Sarasota Cardinal 353-211 to win the Class A, Region 3 title for the second straight season.

“Our goals at the start of the season were to be undefeated, win the region title again and place in the top 10 at state,” Rosepapa said. “We’ve already accomplished two of the three.”

Will Miller was the big point scorer for the Buccaneers. He won the 200 free (1:47.15) and finished second in the 100 free (48.62). Miller also teamed with Zack Bandes, Nathan Weinbren and Andreas Hatoum to take first in the 400 free relay in a season-best 3:23.02. The Buccaneers’ 200 medley relay team of Graham Olney, Hatoum, Alex Bandes and Simon Moskovitz won in 1:44.13.

Berkeley Prep also took second in four other events and had four swimmers score in the 100 and 200 free.

"We don’t have a lot of superstars,” Rosepapa said. “We just have a good team with a lot of quality kids.”

Robinson’s John Nolte was the county’s only boy to win multiple individual events, taking first in the 50 free (22.36) and 100 free (48.53). Tampa Prep’s Rasmus Skjaerpe won the 200 individual medley (1:59.86) and took second in the 100 fly (54.62).

On the girls side, the Terrapins won the team title, defeating defending champion Shorecrest 383-257.5.

Tampa Prep’s Rebecca Werdine won the 50 free (24.51) and 100 free (52.92). Teammate Emma Siewert won the 100 fly (59.38). Siewert and Werdine also teamed with Katie Carter and Carylyn Waite on the winning 200 free relay (1:42.24). In the 400 free relay, Siewert and Carter swam along with Rosalie Spada and Emily Carideo to take first in 3:42.
