TAMPA — Doubt never crept onto Carol Chalu Court Tuesday night. The brisk three-game district semifinal triumphs earned by Tampa Prep and Indian Rocks Christian mostly possessed the feel of voter registration or a garden-club initiation.
Which is to say, they were formalities.
The top-seeded Terrapins (9-15) and second-seeded Golden Eagles (22-5) will meet for the second time this season in Friday night’s 2A-10 final, with a third meeting potentially looming in the playoffs.
The host Terrapins got a combined 24 kills from seniors Ericka McGriff and Gabby Fernandez in a 25-5, 25-15, 25-7 rout of Bishop McLaughlin, while IRC dominated Calvary Christian 25-12, 25-15, 25-13.
Tampa Prep won its regular-season meeting with IRC in four games at home Sept. 21 and has mostly owned the Golden Eagles in recent seasons, but IRC won the 2007 title match.
“They have a competitive fire that they want to beat Tampa Prep,” Terrapins coach Mike Flynn said. “Yeah, they’re a skilled team, but when you’re facing a skilled team with that (motivational) factor, you’ve got to be sure you take care of your side of the net.”
IRC got 12 kills and 13 digs Tuesday from 5-foot-8 senior Marisa Moralobo, her 11th such double-double in a row. Rangy junior Madi Loebel added nine kills and six blocks, while sophomore Ashley Llerena had 25 assists.
