BRADENTON —  A lack of effort wasn’t St. Stephen’s problem Tuesday.  A lack of execution was.

The youth-laden Falcons fell 8-2 to Northside Christian in a Class 2A, District 11 semifinal. The Falcons (3-14) got the leadoff hitter on in every inning and wound up leaving 10 runners on base. And they struck out looking six times.

“This is a game we could have won,” coach Stephanie Travis said.

Playing with a roster that included just one senior, the Falcons squandered their chances, while the Mustangs scored three runs on four hits in their half of the first.

In the fourth inning, Rebecca Banks walked, stole a base and scored on two wild pitches, trimming the score to 3-2 before the Falcons had even gotten a hit. But Northside answered with a run in the fourth and blew the game open with four more in the fifth.

The Mustangs face top-seeded Shorecrest, a 14-4 winner over Out-of-Door, in Thursday’s final.
