LARGO — Officially, the Class 2A, District 12 girls tournament at Bardmoor Country Club had to be played. But the results could have been written before the first tee shot.

For the fourth straight year, St. Petersburg’s Shane Crutchfield won the individual championship, firing 1-over, 73. Her score was 17 shots better than second-place finisher Ally Franzese of Osceola.

And since there were only two schools with enough golfers to field a team, both Osceola (423) and Clearwater (551) advanced to next week’s regionals at Walden Lakes Golf Club in Plant City.

St. Petersburg brought four golfers to the tournament, but one was ruled ineligible because she was not listed on the official district tournament roster. Another player forgot about districts and went to school instead. A team must have four scores to count. The other individual qualifiers were Hayley Betz (105) of Northeast and Brianna Thompson (122) of Boca Ciega.

Crutchfield started out red hot on the front nine before cooling off on the back.

“It wasn’t as good as I was hoping for,’’ Crutchfield said. “I was 3 under on the front, but then I made two doubles on 15 and 16 and that killed me. I was hoping to go under par today.’’

She’ll have another chance to go low next week. The senior has her sights set on trying to win her first state championship.

“My main goal is to make states for the third year in a row,’’ Crutchfield said. “It would be great to finish up my senior year by making a run at the state title.’’
