The Wiregrass Ranch boys golf team had a record-breaking season in 2010.
The Bulls finished the year as Sunshine Athletic Conference champion and, a week ago, won their first district title.
On Monday, though, the Bulls’ magic ended.
Wiregrass Ranch shot 327 as a team and finished seventh out of nine participants at the Class 2A, Region 2 tournament at The Golf Club of Fleming Island.
The Bulls were unable to overcome a strong field that saw Spruce Creek (291) and Bartram Trail (295) advance to the state tournament.
“At the turn after nine holes, we were in third. We were off to a really great start, and then some of my guys just couldn’t hold it as they played the back nine,” Wiregrass Ranch coach Nick Cuviello said. “They did the best they could.”
Wiregrass Ranch’s Dylan Larson and Land O’Lakes’ Jon Kopsell fired even-par 72 to force a three-way playoff along with Lake Mary’s Nick Spencer for the final individual qualifying spot.
Larson bowed out after bogeying the first playoff hole.
Kopsell and Spencer battled through three more holes before Spencer prevailed.
Land O’Lakes placed eighth at the tournament. The Gators’ Robert Nieman carded 73 to tie for ninth place overall.
Springstead was ninth.
