The defending back-to-back state champion Wharton boys tennis team emerged from a Class 4A-5 second-place tiebreaker with Newsome on Friday to advance to regionals. The Wildcats defeated Newsome 5-2 at Hunter’s Green.
“We felt like we should have won,” Wharton coach Marcie Scholl said. “We won No. 1, 2 and 3 singles and No. 2 doubles in districts and we’re looking forward to the next round.”
On Friday though, the Wildcats emerged with a big win at No. 2 doubles, with Ben Hwang and Cesar Madea winning a hard-fought 8-6 match. The Wildcats advance to face St. Petersburg in the next round Tuesday.
