LUTZ — Top-seeded Steinbrenner advanced easily to the final of the Class 4A, District 9 tournament with a 8-0 mercy rule victory over Jefferson on Thursday night.
The match only made it to a few minutes after halftime as incessant pressure by Steinbrenner kept the game completely one sided.
“I think we met our tactical objective to play more simply in the middle third,” Steinbrenner coach Teresa Patterson said.
“We wanted to set the pace of the game and I thought we did that well. We had some offensive plays that I’m particularly proud of but today is the start of a new season for us so we just have to keep getting better as the tournament goes on.”
Five Warriors found the back of the net against Jefferson with Cici Gonzalez, Lauren Garris and freshman Danielle Eule all scoring twice.
Steinbrenner will meet Strawberry Crest in the final after the Chargers upset No. 2-seeded Robinson in the early game.
In the 36th minute, midfielder Samantha Buterbaugh got on the end of a throw in, drove toward the right edge of the 18-yard box and chipped the ball over the goalkeeper.
Strawberry Crest was able to cling to its slim lead despite Robinson dominating possession throughout most of the game and having the better opportunities.
“I think this was the best game we’ve played all year,” Strawberry Crest coach Claudine Sosa said. “We won balls in the air and overcame some scary moments in defense.
“We’ve already achieved our original goal which was to get to the final so the pressure is off. We just have to play our game tomorrow.”
