TAMPA — Strawberry Crest became the school’s first athletic program to win a district title, notching a 5-2 victory over Jefferson (18-4) on Thursday night in the Class 4A, District 9 final.

Sophomore Brianna Alonso pitched a complete game for the Chargers (22-2), showing tremendous composure after giving up a home run for the first time this season in the second inning.

“That’s the first time anyone has hit a home run off me this season but I had to shake it off,” Alonso said. “I knew I had to just focus and keep pitching or we’d be in trouble. It means a lot to me to have been the starting pitcher in this game. I think this game will be remembered as a big night in our school’s history for a long time.”

The Chargers got their bats going with a three run fourth inning in which captain Mia Fung drove in two runs with a two-out single. They added runs in the fifth and seventh innings to cap off a patient performance at the plate.

Coach Mindy Miltner was pleased with the poise that her girls showed and is looking forward to having homefield advantage during the playoffs.

“Once their starter began losing control I thought the girls did a nice job of sitting back and waiting for her to throw strikes,” Miltner said. “We got a big pitching performance out of Brianna and everything came together for a win in a really intense game.

“It means a lot ’cause we not only win the first district championship in school history but we host in the next round where we’ll have the support of the entire school with us.”
