BRADENTON — Braden River coach Steve Haugh doesn’t feel there is much more he can do for his team at this late stage of the season. Now it’s on the players to see how far they can take the team.
It might be easy to take that approach with a player like Brittany Jaco. The junior outside hitter supplied a season’s worth of energy in sparking the host Pirates to a 25-23, 25-15, 25-21 triumph over Steinbrenner in a Class 4A region semifinal Tuesday.
Except for a few bumps, Braden River extended its single-season program record to 26-3. Steinbrenner finishes 19-10.
Jaco finished with 14 kills and 12 digs. She took over the third game when the Pirates started playing a little sluggish.
Braden River trailed most of the first game, but came on strong at the end and seemed to take the confidence out of Steinbrenner.
The Pirates coasted in the second game and were behind most of the third. Behind Jaco, the Pirates broke a 19-all deadlock with four straight points on three kills by Jaco. They led 24-21 when Jaco added her final kill of the night.
