East Lake and Clearwater met for the fifth time in Friday’s Class 5A, District 11 final. And for the fifth time, the Eagles beat their fiercest rival 25-20, 25-18, 25-23 for a second straight district title.

The way East Lake won was similar to the other four matches as it allowed host Clearwater to jump out to a lead before roaring back to win.

“For some reason we have a hard time getting started against Clearwater,” Eagles coach Terry Small said. “We always have to fight to get back into the game.”

In the first game, the Tornadoes were up 16-15 when a timeout was called. After that, East Lake (24-2) got into a rhythm, scoring the next eight points.

The Eagles were led by Brianna McComeskey (13 kills, four blocks) and Jackie Wegner (11 kills).

“I thought we were able to move around and play well,” Small said. “Clearwater played well, too.”
