EAST LAKE — East Lake, ranked No. 2 in the nation according to ESPN Rise, clicked on all levels in Tuesday’s 4-0 victory over Venice in the Class 5A region finals.
Alyssa Bache was on top of her game early, striking out nine of her first 11 batters. Venice could do nothing against the ace, who didn’t allow a runner on base until a fourth-inning walk.
“I was very relaxed and confident during the game, my team played great defense and the victory was a total team effort,” said Bache, who struck out 16 on the night.
The Eagles jumped all over the opposing pitcher immediately, as Alyssa Weaver singled, followed by a triple from Sarah Schutz that sent Weaver home. Also in the inning, Hayley Davis singled to drive in Schutz, putting the Eagles up 2-0.
In the sixth inning, Davis, with no runners on, hit a solo blast to put the Eagles up 3-0. Amanda Weaver singled, followed by another single from Erin Rawls to close out scoring.
“I had been struggling with outside pitches, but I remained patient and she put one in my wheelhouse and I homered,” said Davis who went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs.
The Eagles (28-0) face Bartow on May 13 in the state semifinals at Clermont.
“It’s the girls that make things go so well and that I can plug anyone to the lineup and be successful,” coach Mike Estes said. “The team was very focused and we are one step closer to reaching our goal (of winning state).”
