Zephyrhills' preseason win against River Ridge was mostly about identifying a starting quarterback.

The search will continue into this week's preparations for a game at Wiregrass Ranch in Week 2.

Bulldogs co-interim coach Greg Mathis said Saturday the battle is between two guys - Wesley Chapel transfer Jamal Roberts and Lakeland transfer Charles Smith.

Both played in a 13-7 win against the Royal Knights. Smith connected twice with Chris Reaves - who had been mentioned as a quarterback contender - in the second half. Reaves is out of the mix and will play receiver.

But Mathis must choose a quarterback.

"Either guy would be a good fit," Mathis said. " It depends what we put in place to determine who will start where."

Mathis said Roberts brings good footwork and would be a natural fit for option plays. Mathis said Roberts has a very strong arm helping to get the ball into tight places in a flash.

Chances are, both guys will be on the field regardless, Mathis said.

Roberts rushed for 85 yards on 12 attempts and completed 2-of-6 passes for 24 yards and an interception. Smith was 7-of-15 for 112 yards and two touchdown passes Reaves in the fourth quarter.
