AHN, Jesuit win district track titles

TAMPA -- Less than a week ago, the tendinitis in Ryann McEnany's left ankle was so excruciating, she collapsed in tears upon trying to climb the stairs in her home.

"My dad had to come pick me up," the Academy of the Holy Names junior said.

On Friday, McEnany took three pain-free climbs up the district meet medal stand.

Six days after being carried from the triple jump pit at the Florida Relays in Gainesville, McEnany won both hurdles events and the long jump at the Class 2A, District 9 meet at Berkeley Prep. Her explanation for the rapid recovery: steady doses of ice, Aleve and faith.

"I came into the meet very nervous," said McEnany, who helped lead the Jaguars (184.5 points) to an overwhelming team victory over runner-up Berkeley Prep (111).

"I haven't done any hurdle work all week, and I honestly just give all the glory to God, because I know it was him working."

On a warm day marked by a brisk headwind, McEnany was among a host of local multi-event boys and girls champions. The top four finishers in each event qualified for Thursday's Region 3 meet in Titusville.

Freshman teammate Colleen Doherty won the 1,600 and 3,200, while Tampa Catholic sophomore T.J. Harrel -- a Crusaders linebacker -- won the boys 100 and 200 and ran second leg on the Crusaders' triumphant 4x100 relay team.

But not even Harrel's career night could impede Jesuit's romp to a fourth consecutive team title. The Tigers collected 115 of their 178 points in the field events, with senior Ike Edwards winning the discus and shot put.

Pole vaulters Nick Catchuri and Ryan Clark (pictured) both posted 13-foot efforts to place first and third, respectively; while senior Nick Medich won the high jump (6-6). Jesuit also swept the hurdles, with Dante Newberg and Nahum Hill winning the 110 and 300, respectively.

It's likely none of them, however, were grimacing with each step as recently as last Monday. McEnany, who has experienced pain in the ankle most of the last month, said she feared her season was over after the Florida Relays, despite a negative X-ray on Monday.

"No one," she said, "realized how much pain I was in."
