After a one-year absence, Al Alcala is returning as Gaither's softball coach.

Alcala, who guided the Cowboys to 20-win campaigns in each of his three seasons, confirmed his return Tuesday. A Tampa Fire Rescue investigator by day, he's technically a "volunteer coach" for now because his coaching certification expired.

Jerry Murray, head of the the school's science department according to Gaither's Web site, is officially the coach.

But Alcala said he'll be running the show.

"I've always had a passion for it," said Alcala, who initially resigned because of a potential promotion at work that would've required more hours. "I love it. And I'm in the same district as Chamberlain and Sickles, so I'm looking forward to the matchups."

Alcala and Murray replace Laura Wolf, who stepped down after one season.
