Less than two years after his first organized football game, Armwood NG Shelldon Lewinson is a bona fide Division I commitment.
Lewinson, the Hawks' strongest player according to coach Sean Callahan, announced Wednesday he'll sign with Wake Forest. Lewinson is the fourth Hawks player to commit to a major college program this offseason.
"I chose Wake Forest because I like their academic program. They're very high in the medical field and I want to be doctor," said Lewinson, a Jamaica native and A-B student. "They're in the ACC and I see myself doing well at that college."
In his first varsity season, Lewinson (6-foot-1 1/2, 240 pounds) recorded 53 tackles, four sacks and two fumble recoveries in 2010. He has bench pressed 390 pounds and squatted 650. Hawks coaches say he recently squatted 585 six times.
Western Michigan and Temple were his other two finalists.
"I don't want to have any pressure (about choosing a college) over the season," he said. "I need to focus on football and school. I can't be doing my homework and getting calls from football coaches and everything. It could be quite distracting."
