Tyrail Hawkins, Hernando (5-foot-11, 180 pounds)
The latest: Ball State handed the Leopards athlete his first Division I offer Thursday, Hernando coach John Palmer said. Hawkins is the second senior-to-be on his team to get a D-I offer, after pass rusher Darren Hambrick.
Offers: Georgia Southern, Ball State
Last season: Hawkins rushed for 1,242 yards and 16 touchdowns last fall at running back and Wildcat quarterback. He caught three TDs, tallied 23 tackles and defended a team-high nine passes last fall during the Leopards’ district title run. He was a first-team all-North Suncoast selection.
Bottom line: Hawkins is one of the North Suncoast’s top all-around athletes who could see time at quarterback, running back, receiver, returner and defensive back this fall. Expect him to get more D-I interest in the coming weeks.
